According to data from Locally's real-time network of more than 55,000 retailers worldwide, 71 percent of consumers preferred local retailers, and nearly 50 percent of online shoppers abandoned carts when a local pickup wasn't an option.

Pace of U.S. Small Business Jobs Showed Moderate Growth in 2024

The national jobs index was relatively unchanged (0.02 percentage points) at the close of the year in December and has held its pace since the summer. At 2.96 percent in December, hourly earnings growth for U.S. small business workers remained below 3 percent for the fifth consecutive month, according to the report.

Healthy Consumer Sales Figures Signal a Positive Holiday Shopping Season Awaits Retailers

Retail sales in October were up 0.4 percent seasonally, adjusted month-over-month and 2.8 percent year-over-year, compared with increases of 0.8 percent month-over-month and 2 percent year-over-year in September. Meanwhile, core retail sales were unchanged on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis but were up 5.4 percent unadjusted year over year. According to the NRF, core sales were up 3.5 percent year over year for the first 10 months of 2024, in line with the NRF’s forecast for 2024 retail sales to grow between 2.5 percent and 3.5 percent compared with 2023.

U.S. Economy Is Facing ‘Critical Moment’ With Consumers and Businesses

Wednesday, July 10, 2024 8:15 AM As inflation continues to ease and the Federal Reserve ponders when to lower interest rates, the nation is in a “critical moment” of waiting to see what will happen next, according to National Retail Federation chief economist Jack Kleinhenz. His comments appeared in the July issue of NRF’s Monthly Economic Review, which said year-over-year gross domestic product growth dropped from 3.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2023 to 1.4 percent in the first quarter this year, reaching its lowest point since the spring of 2022. A key contributor to the deceleration was slower consumer activity—a goal of high interest rates intended to tame inflation without causing a recession, the Monthly Economic Review noted.
