WAIMEA BAY, Hawaii—Costa Sunglasses, from EssilorLuxottica, has partnered with The EDDIE Big Wave Invitational, a surf contest and celebration of Hawaiian culture, big wave athletes and the memory of Eddie Aikau. The event kicked off on December 6 in Waimea Bay, North Shore, Hawaii; it is a three-month event that will conclude in March 2025. Costa is the official eyewear of The EDDIE, and will provide eyewear to all competitors, lifeguards and watermen.

Costa Pro and big wave athlete Mark Healey is an invitee at this year’s EDDIE; a full list of invitees is available on The EDDIE’s website.

In a statement, Costa said its partnership with The EDDIE “reflects a shared commitment to the ocean, dedication to sustainability and conservation, and the drive to inspire future generations to do the same.” The Eddie Aikau Foundation, which runs The EDDIE, pays tribute to and carries on the legacy of Eddie Aikau, the first lifeguard on Oahu's North Shore who saved over 500 people in his lifetime, the Foundation said. Aikau was also a big wave surfer and dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Hawaiian culture.

The Foundation said its goals include “advancing education and community service; supporting ocean-related activities and events; assisting in the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian history and culture; and encouraging Hawaiians and visitors alike to respect and contribute to the growth and development of Hawaiian culture.”
