PARIS—At Silmo 2023, which was held in Paris from September 29 through October 2, Mykita was awarded the show’s first-ever “Responsible Company” prize, which recognized the eyewear brand’s progress in social and environmental responsibility. The category was assessed by an independent CSR expert jury, and was open to all who exhibited at Silmo Paris this year.

Silmo launched the Responsible Company prize this year to honor progress in social and environmental responsibility in the industry, and to highlight companies in the optical sector that are implementing responsible practices and inspiring progress, encouraging change and sharing best practice examples that foster emulation.

The independent judging panel of recognized expert leaders in CSR, which included consulting agency Hyssop, developed the award criteria and provided third-party evaluation of all applications. The prize evaluates companies holistically—not based on the CSR approach of a single product. Environmental and social aspects were assessed according to 17 criteria: the company’s existing commitments, as well as future undertakings and objectives were considered, and evidence and indicators had to be provided to justify any green claims.

Mykita submitted a comprehensive presentation that introduced its independent and integrated business model, its Modern Manufactory with local production, its responsible design ethos and its various CSR proofs and future milestones—all of which was embedded in the wider context of the company’s recently introduced purpose and strategic platform.

Mykita’s recent CSR journey highlights include:

  • Installing a CSR function in 2021, at director level
  • Pioneering the full switch to Eastman Acetate Renew in 2022 as first in the industry
  • Achieving full circularity with its stainless steel supply in 2022
  • Comprehensive repair and care services provided for wholesale and retail customers, with the aim to prolong product lifespan
  • Today, 90 percent of the purchased material is recycled, while 100 percent is recyclable
  • In 2023, introduction of a corporate purpose & new strategic platform axed around CSR topics, to guide the company through a sustainability transformation

Moritz Krueger, founder & creative director of Mykita, said, “Mykita is committed to generating positive change and meaningful innovation for the wellbeing of people, protecting the planet, with eyes set on a bright future for generations to come. To receive this prize is a tremendous validation of our path, and strong encouragement to heighten our efforts and continue to push further on social and environmental responsibility.”
