Top Line: The Vision Council is launching the “Gear Up, Shades On” campaign, beginning National Sunglasses Day on June 27, to encourage people to protect their eyes from harmful UV radiation while playing sports or participating in outdoor activities.
Close Up: Participants are invited to share a photo of themselves wearing sunglasses on social media on National Sunglasses Day, including the hashtag #NationalSunglassesDay. According to The National Institute of Health’s National Eye Institute, 30,000 sports-related eye injuries in the United States yearly require a trip to the emergency room. The Vision Council noted, 90 percent of eye injuries are preventable with proper eye protection. “Our collective impact can ensure that more people are aware of the importance and benefits of UV protective eyewear, enabling them to enjoy outdoor activities with enhanced safety and comfort all year round,” said Ashley Mills, CEO of The Vision Council.
Vital Stats: In addition to posting selfies on social media, The Vision Council is inviting participants and eyecare providers to download National Sunglasses Day resources from their website including a ready-made toolkit with social media graphics, sample copy, and logos by clicking here.
