ROCHESTER, N.Y.--Bausch & Lomb is launching its PureVision Multi-Focal (balafilcon A) Visibility Tinted Contact Lens for vision correction in people with presbyopia. The commercial availability of PureVision Multi-Focal completes Bausch & Lomb’s silicone hydrogel contact lens portfolio within the U.S. market, which includes PureVision spherical and PureVision Toric designs.
“PureVision Multi-Focal is an historic product launch for Bausch & Lomb because it marks the introduction of the first silicone hydrogel multifocal contact lens within the U.S. market and it clearly distinguishes our company as the first to offer a complete family of spherical, toric and multifocal lens designs all with enhanced aspheric optics using a healthy and comfortable silicone hydrogel material,” said Lisa Fawcett, vice president of contact lens marketing, Americas Region.
According to Fawcett, the PureVision Multi-Focal contact lens combines Bausch & Lomb’s industry-leading SofLens Multi-Focal lens design with enhanced aspheric optics on the anterior surface of the lens, to provide exceptionally crisp vision at all focal lengths--near, far and in-between.
“We combined this optical design with our patented AerGel silicone hydrogel material resulting in a healthy lens wearing experience for patients,” said Fawcett. “Beyond the lens material the unique architecture of PureVision Multi-Focal adds to the patient’s comfort with its patented rounded edge design, which helps reduce lens awareness and its patented wide-intermediate-power profile that allows for incremental power variance across the entire optic zone for clear, crisp vision at all distances.”

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last spring, the PureVision Multi-Focal contact lens is the only commercially available multifocal contact lens indicated for daily wear or for extended wear up to 30 days for the correction of nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia) for presbyopes.
The Bausch & Lomb PureVision Multi-Focal contact lens is designed for monthly replacement and is currently available only within the U.S. market.
The Bausch & Lomb PureVision family of lenses is made from balafilcon A, an innovative silicone hydrogel material patented by Bausch & Lomb, with enhanced optical designs and surface properties that provide crisp vision, comfort and health for the demanding and unpredictable lifestyles of today’s patients.
The company is currently distributing PureVision Multi-Focal contact lens trial cabinets to eyecare professionals, with ongoing distribution over the next three months.
