Travel remains brisk despite a struggling economy and travel advisories. A new report from Squaremouth, an online marketplace that helps travelers compare and buy travel insurance policies, finds that recent travel disruptions and an active hurricane season have done little to dampen travel plans. New data finds that travel is up 8 percent heading into the fall.

Looking at travel insurance policies for planned trips this year, Squaremouth was able to pinpoint several trends for the fall travel season.

The cost of travel is expected to rise by more than 36 percent with the average price tag for a trip reaching more than $8,000 compared with $5,900 in 2023.

After sliding out of the top spot in recent years, Italy has returned as the most popular destination this fall, surpassing the U.S. and Mexico. It’s expected that 12 percent of travelers will choose Italy as their destination, compared with 8 percent in 2023, according to the report.

Squaremouth noted that of the top 10 travel destinations this fall, Mexico has the lowest average cost at just over $3,500, while Japan tops out at more than $9,000. The company added that 2024 marks the first time Portugal has made the top 10 list of travel destinations.

New data shows that Baby Boomers will make the most trips on average at 47 percent, compared with 34 percent in 2023. Meanwhile, Gen Z will make the fewest number of trips, falling to 9 percent compared with 18 percent last year. The Silent generation has seen the biggest gain in the number of travelers expected for 2024, climbing to 44 percent.
