BUSINESS EssilorLuxottica Acquires the Canadian Med-Tech Start-Up Cellview By Staff Wednesday, February 12, 2025 12:21 AM PARIS—EssilorLuxottica (Euronext: EL) announced that it has acquired Toronto-based Cellview Imaging Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of ophthalmic imaging devices for early-stage eye disease detection. With distribution throughout North America, Cellview Imaging Inc. specializes in ophthalmic imaging devices, applied optics and software analysis targeted to general ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, internists, neurologists and other health care professionals. Among the company's offerings is an FDA- and CE-approved ultrawidefield retinal camera, the announcement advised, which is targeted to a customer base that includes retail eyecare practices and ophthalmology clinics.“We are happy to welcome Cellview’s team to EssilorLuxottica and to work together to accelerate our strategy in vision health," said Francesco Milleri, chairman and CEO, and Paul du Saillant, deputy CEO, at EssilorLuxottica in a joint statement. EssilorLuxottica has made strategic acquisitions to strengthen its position within this area, including the 2023 acquisition of Israeli start-up Nuance and subsequent launch earlier this month of its over-the-counter Nuance Audio Glasses in U.S. and European markets following regulatory approvals. As reported in VMAIL in 2024, the company also acquired an 80 percent stake in the Germany-based Heidelberg Engineering, a company specializing in diagnostic solutions for clinical ophthalmology and, at the end of last year, entered into an agreement to acquire Espansione Group, an Italian company specializing in the design and manufacture of non-invasive medical devices for diagnosing and treating dry eye, ocular surface and retinal diseases.
