We've all been there—we have an itch, an ache or a bump, spend a few sleepless night searching for diagnoses online only to find out at the doctor a week later that it was an ingrown hair. Sometimes, though, the diagnosis can be more serious and we're left at a loss for who to connect with for social support.

To help make those next steps more stable, a new social network called NeedMe is setting out to connect recently diagnosed patients with past patients who have experienced the condition or disease, as well as with information on providers, treatments and medication options based on location and on the experiences of other patients in that area.

According to NeedMe Inc., 79 percent of people newly diagnosed with a disease look for answers about their condition online. To bridge the gap between these patients and the answers they seek, NeedMe can connect new patients to a support community of like-minded individuals who have been through the process before. Successful past patients who have had the same conditions, tests, treatments and procedures at the same locations are available to offer honest advice.

Other features of the site include setting and celebrating recovery goals, seeing treatments other users have followed successfully and getting real-world feedback while remaining 100 percent anonymous.

NeedMe Inc. CEO, Justin Huddy, says the site serves as an alternative to doctor rating sites and chat boards in which "users don't have information on diagnosis or treatment of those who have left reviews or posted information." These types of sits, NeedMe Inc. said, do not ensure accuracy of information and are often plagued by biased reviews (well-intentioned employees, patients who inflate negative experiences, competitors looking to gain an edge).

"When people have a change in health status, such as a new diagnosis, they often turn to family for advice, however family members have not necessarily been through the same ailment or treatment procedures," Huddy continued. "With NeedMe, those people can now quickly and easily ask questions of other patients who have successfully been through the same health scenario. It is why we use the slogan 'Honest Answers from Actual Patients.'"
