SAN FRANCISCO—Following the Feb. 19 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to not hear an appeal to California’s rules preventing optical retailers from offering on-site eye exams (as reported in VMail last week), LensCrafters vowed to continue to serve the California market, according to a statement sent to VMail.

While representatives of the other plaintiffs (Highmark’s Eye Care Centers of America Inc. and the National Association of Optometrists & Opticians) declined to comment, LensCrafters shared the following statement with VMail: “Despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to not hear the case, and because the case dealt with broad issues of legal construction and not with direct issues of our business operations, LensCrafters will continue to serve the needs of our consumers in the California market through our 100+ stores throughout the state. We firmly believe that the laws under debate restrict freedom of choice for consumers and that they limit freedom of choice among practitioners in selecting practice settings. We will continue to pursue a rightful outcome.”
