By Staff
Tuesday, April 30, 2024 10:50 AM I started working in optometry as a technician at my father’s practice in Philadelphia when I was 16 years old. It began as an after-school job, and at the time, I had no intention of pursuing optometry as a career. However, that experience ultimately led me to the eyecare field for the rest of my professional life. I was first introduced to myopia management as a student under Dr. Fuensanta Vera-Diaz at NECO. As a -9.00D myope myself, I immediately knew this was an area of optometry I would be incorporating into my practice. Read More

A Guide to Guide Dogs

By Staff
Monday, April 29, 2024 10:50 AM NEW YORK—International Guide Dog Day falls on the last Wednesday of April every year, making this past Wednesday, April 24, the 2024 edition. The day was first introduced to mark the establishment of the International Federation of Guide Dog Associations, which was founded on April 26, 1989, and offers a chance to celebrate the life-saving work guide dogs and their trainers and handlers do every day, said the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF). References to guide dogs date back to the 16th century, according to the IGDF. There’s no denying that man’s best friend has worked alongside us for much of human history—and that they are more than deserving of a holiday set aside just for them and the teams they create. Review of Optometry: To See in 3D

By Staff
Monday, April 29, 2024 10:40 AM We all have a tendency to slip into bad habits, especially as we aim for greater efficiency in our clinical exams. One test that some practitioners may overlook or omit in order to decrease chair time is stereopsis. As we have observed, however, not only can stereo change, but regular assessment of stereo can provide insight into patients’ overall comfort and binocular stability. Here, we offer you a review of four commonly used stereo tests and discuss their clinical usefulness. Read More

Review of Optometric Business: What I Learned About the OD Students Who May Be My Future Associates

By Staff
Friday, April 26, 2024 1:00 PM The associates we hire can help us surge as a practice. They can expand availability of appointments and improve patient care, sometimes bringing new expertise into our office. Here is what I learned last fall when I participated in the Vision Source Next Practice Crawl for optometry students, which gave these soon-to-be ODs a glimpse of work life in a variety of practices, including my own. As a practice owner, I have a vested interest in keeping independent optometry as strong as possible, and one of the best ways to do that is to ensure there is a large pool of new graduates who are interested in pursuing private practice.
