University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry has announced it will award honorary degrees during the 50th commencement ceremony to two professionals who have made substantial contributions to the advancement of optometry, vision research and public health care: Richard E. Feinbloom and Stephen A. Burns Ph.D.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Vision Council, a trade association dedicated to supporting the optical industry, has announced the successful culmination of its 2024 Congressional Hill Fly-In. Members from the vision community traveled to the nation’s capital and met with more than 20 offices of influential policymakers to discuss pivotal policy matters affecting optical manufacturers, distributors and retailers.

ORLANDO, Fla.—
Vision Source, a North American network of independent private practice optometrists, has expanded its roster of offerings with two new programs for its membership of 4,500 optometrists and 3,000 locally owned practices. Announced at The Exchange 2024, Vision Source’s annual national meeting that was held this year from April 10 to 13 and attracted 3,100 members, staff and industry partners, the two individual programs offer the opportunity for student loan debt relief as well as employee health care benefits. Queen’s University Belfast recently released the findings of their collaborative THRIVE (Tradespeople and Hand-workers Rural Initiative for a Vision-enhanced Economy) study, which found that a pair of reading glasses increases the earnings of people in low-income communities by 33 percent. THRIVE, carried out across rural Bangladesh, is the first randomized controlled trial to measure the impact of reading glasses on income.

Prevent Blindness, a leading nonprofit eye health organization, has declared April as Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month. According to
Orbis International, an international nonprofit that builds sustainable eyecare systems, globally 112 million more women than men live with vision loss, including blindness. Prevent Blindness is offering free resources, including fact sheets, shareable social media graphics, educational videos and web pages, on a range of eye health issues that predominantly affect women, according to an announcement from the organization.
