Review of Myopia Management: Talking to Parents About Myopia Gets More Pediatric Patients in My Office Chair

By Staff
Tuesday, April 30, 2024 10:50 AM I started working in optometry as a technician at my father’s practice in Philadelphia when I was 16 years old. It began as an after-school job, and at the time, I had no intention of pursuing optometry as a career. However, that experience ultimately led me to the eyecare field for the rest of my professional life. I was first introduced to myopia management as a student under Dr. Fuensanta Vera-Diaz at NECO. As a -9.00D myope myself, I immediately knew this was an area of optometry I would be incorporating into my practice. Read More

A Guide to Guide Dogs

By Staff
Monday, April 29, 2024 10:50 AM NEW YORK—International Guide Dog Day falls on the last Wednesday of April every year, making this past Wednesday, April 24, the 2024 edition. The day was first introduced to mark the establishment of the International Federation of Guide Dog Associations, which was founded on April 26, 1989, and offers a chance to celebrate the life-saving work guide dogs and their trainers and handlers do every day, said the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF). References to guide dogs date back to the 16th century, according to the IGDF. There’s no denying that man’s best friend has worked alongside us for much of human history—and that they are more than deserving of a holiday set aside just for them and the teams they create. Review of Optometry: To See in 3D

By Staff
Monday, April 29, 2024 10:40 AM We all have a tendency to slip into bad habits, especially as we aim for greater efficiency in our clinical exams. One test that some practitioners may overlook or omit in order to decrease chair time is stereopsis. Many practitioners perform stereo testing on new, younger patients but not established or adult patients in the belief that stereopsis does not change over time or that it is only needed in childhood. As we have observed, however, not only can stereo change, but regular assessment of stereo can provide insight into patients’ overall comfort and binocular stability. Here, we offer you a review of four commonly used stereo tests and discuss their clinical usefulness. Read More

Review of Optometric Business: What I Learned About the OD Students Who May Be My Future Associates

By Staff
Friday, April 26, 2024 1:00 PM The associates we hire can help us surge as a practice. They can expand availability of appointments and improve patient care, sometimes bringing new expertise into our office. Here is what I learned last fall when I participated in the Vision Source Next Practice Crawl for optometry students, which gave these soon-to-be ODs a glimpse of work life in a variety of practices, including my own. As a practice owner, I have a vested interest in keeping independent optometry as strong as possible, and one of the best ways to do that is to ensure there is a large pool of new graduates who are interested in pursuing private practice. By Staff
Thursday, April 25, 2024 11:00 AM Anika Ramolia, OD, spent more than a decade working for corporate and private ODs. But two years ago, a health scare and a strong need to spend more time with her two young children started her thinking more seriously about taking a leap of faith to open her own practice. In April 2023, she found a space less than two miles away from her home in Carlsbad, California. The 1,000-square-foot space was one of 15 units in a newly renovated plaza, 13 of which were already operating as female-owned local businesses. Feeling the positive buzz of community in the plaza, she signed her lease in June 2023 and started construction right away. Beacon Optometry had its grand opening March 15, 2024. Read More

Review of Ophthalmology: The Pros and Cons of Preservatives

By Staff
Tuesday, April 23, 2024 10:45 AM As you know, preservatives are a mixed blessing. The Food and Drug Administration requires that multidose bottles of medications include a preservative to kill bacteria and fungi that may contaminate the fluid in the bottle; as a result, for several decades our medications have contained preservatives specifically designed to keep the medications sterile during patient use and the life cycle of the bottle. Unfortunately, while these preservatives are very effective against pathogens, they were not specifically designed to be friendly to the eye. They tend to consist of harsh chemicals that stop bacterial growth but also harm corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells. After chronic use of medications containing these preservatives, the deleterious effect on anterior segment epithelial cells leads to poor production and maintenance of the tear film, resulting in problems such as dry-eye syndrome. The Power of Reading Glasses

By Staff
Monday, April 22, 2024 6:45 PM Just how valuable are a pair of reading glasses? According to a recent study, having access to a pair of readers can make all the difference, especially if you are presbyopic and live in a part of the world with limited access to eyecare and eyewear products. This past week, VisionSpring, a nonprofit provider of affordable eyeglasses to people in need, BRAC, an international development organization that works with marginalized communities, and Queen’s University Belfast released the findings of their collaborative THRIVE study, which found that a pair of reading glasses increases the earnings of people in low-income communities by 33 percent. Ella Gudwin, CEO of VisionSpring, summed it up best when she said, “THRIVE strengthens the case that it’s not about the eyeglasses—it’s about everything that comes after.” Read More
