Top Line: First Insight Corporation, developers of MaximEyes 2014 Certified EHR recently announced that MaximEyes EHR is now successfully integrated with the nation's first comprehensive eye disease and condition patient database, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s IRIS Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight), by automatically extracting and mapping relevant elements and fields from the MaximEyes EHR software database and transmitting on a scheduled basis to the IRIS Registry.
Close Up: The IRIS Registry is a centralized collection and reporting software tool that compiles and processes data from electronic health records (EHR) to enable ophthalmologists to statistically analyze their own care, compare it to that of their peers and pinpoint opportunities for improvement. The database also allows ophthalmologists to manage their patients at a population level and answer specific clinical questions. The IRIS Registry is expected to provide other significant benefits, such as streamlined participation in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS). As an approved PQRS electronic health record submission vendor, the IRIS Registry can directly and automatically extract data for PQRS measures and submit it to CMS on a practice's behalf, eliminating the need for the traditional method of manually reporting data on Medicare claims throughout the year.
Vital Stats: The IRIS Registry is currently being piloted with 120 ophthalmology practices across 35 states. Access to the IRIS Registry will be made widely available to U.S.-based members of the Academy by April 2014. The IRIS Registry is designed to integrate with any EHR system. Reverse Optics' New Binocular Scanner App Takes Online Measurements

Binocular Scanner is a patent pending, mobile device app that allows the online retailer or ECP to acquire all optical measurements online (i.e. PD, seg height, etc.) that are needed to accurately produce a pair of eyeglasses. This app creates a new category in online optical measurements the company calls TeleMeasurement. The consumer takes one photo (without any third party scaling device such as credit card or a CD in the photo), which is then uploaded to a server where the online retailer or eyecare professional takes a few additional steps to acquire accurate measurements such as PD and seg height.
Top Line: ReverseOptics, a leader in online frame presentation and digital optical measurement technology, announced that its new online application, (available in iOS and Android), Binocular Scanner, is now available to online eyeglass and optical companies for customization.
Close Up: In Step 1, the user takes one photo with a mobile device (i.e. iPad/iPhone) while facing a wall mirror. The app then creates a Stereo Photo Image (SPI), which is automatically uploaded to a designated computer server. In Step 2, a qualified eyecare professional selects reference points on the SPI to acquire the desired optical measurements. A variety of measurements are possible, such as the PD, seg height, etc. This TeleMeasurement approach is simple for the consumer to use, keeps the eyecare professional/company in the optical measurement loop and creates a comprehensive set of accurate optical measurements, the company noted.

Reticare Launches First Ocular Protector for Electronic Device Screens

Top Line: Reticare, the first ocular shield for screens of electronic devices that protects the retina while preventing Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is being introduced by Sustainable & Responsible Technology LLC of Beverly Hills, Calif., which developed it jointly with Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) in Madrid, Spain.
Close Up: Results of recent in-vitro (or experimental) studies conducted by UCM and Dr. Celia Sánchez-Ramos, an expert on ocular phototoxicity, have shown that part of the LED light emitted by electronic device screens can damage retinal cells. Without adequate protection, a large amount of pigmentary retinal cells of human donors died after exposure to direct LED radiation emitted by this type of light. The studies also revealed that children and young adults are most susceptible to retinal damage, as they lack the natural protection that the human body progressively acquires through pigmentation of the lens. This research has led to the development of Reticare.
