Fuel3D Reports Public Trial of 3D Mirror Scanner by European Retailers

Product: Fuel3D & Sfered’s Mirror Scanner
Top Line: The recently developed 3D Mirror Scanner combines the image capture capabilities of Fuel3D’s advanced 3D scanning platform with Sfered’s custom eyewear systems. It is the first 3D scanner for the eyewear sector to be incorporated into a mirror, the companies said.
Close Up: Fuel3D, a leading 3D capture and imaging innovator, and Dutch eyewear technology developer Sfered are debuting a new mirror-based 3D scanning system to support the deployment and fitting of custom eyewear. The system, which is being demonstrated in collaboration with 3D printed eyewear firm monoqool at SILMO this week, already has been trialed with retail opticians in Europe, the companies reported.
Monoqool is the first to integrate the scanner with a virtual fitting system.
The companies said the new scanner is the first 3D scanner for the eyewear sector to be incorporated into a mirror. The 180-degree scanner was tested in select optical retail locations in Europe during the summer, with full retail availability of the system expected by the end of 2016.
The incorporation of the scanner into a mirror places the technology ahead of other emerging facial capture systems, according to Fuel3D and Sfered.
“When people look into a mirror, they relax, straighten up and focus much more naturally than if they are looking into a camera, which means that the scanner collects more accurate data for custom eyewear fitting,” Sfered chief executive officer Peter Tutuarima said.
Key features:
• Highly accurate facial scanning that allows opticians to collect all metrics required for fitting of eyewear and production of custom fit eyewear in a single scan.
• High speed 3D capture that collects facial data in 0.1 seconds, allowing data capture of: pupillary distance; nose bridge width; facial width; and distance to ear.
• Access to a wide range of frame data held in Sfered’s frames database, allowing opticians to virtually fit frames to customers for an enhanced customer experience.
• An open platform that allows frame manufacturers like monoqool to upload their catalogs for virtual fitting of frames.
Vital Stats: Allan Petersen, chief executive officer of monoqool, said he believes “customized eyewear is a great tool for independent opticians and optometrists as they increasingly compete with the large chains.” Denmark’s monoqool is an innovator in eyewear design, pioneering 3D laser printed polyamid frames that are customized to the wearer.

FDA Clears Advanced Vision Technologies’ EyePrintPRO Prosthetic Device

Product: EyePrintPRO prosthetic scleral device and EyePrint Impression Process
Top Line: Advanced Vision Technologies reported that the FDA cleared for manufacturing the EyePrintPRO prosthetic scleral device and the proprietary EyePrint Impression Process.
Close Up: The EyePrint Impression Process creates an exact 3D model of the ocular surface, which in combination with EyePrint Designer (EPD) software develops a unique and precise scleral device for protection and optical correction of the eye.
Patents are pending for EPD software, which utilizes proprietary Elevation Specific Technology that enable 360 degrees of perfect alignment of the EyePrintPRO haptic landing zone. This permits unparalleled comfort, and vision and ocular health for the most highly irregular and diseased corneal conditions, Keith Parker, Advanced Vision Technologies’ president, said in a statement.
University of Iowa professor of clinical ophthalmology Christine Sindt, OD, FAAO, FSLS, said: “The EyePrint, like a fingerprint, is unique to the individual and allows for fitting characteristics and optics which are unattainable in other scleral lenses, even in the most difficult eyes.”
Vital Stats: EyePrintPRO is featured in the Optimum Extra 100Dk Contamac GP material. The EyePrintPRO, developed by EyePrint Prosthetics, is available through trained EyePrint practitioners at EyePrint referral sites.
