The Optical Industry Embraces Juneteenth

NEW YORK—Juneteenth, our newest federal holiday, has its roots in Galveston, Texas, dating back to 1865. On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston were informed of their freedom, which had been declared two years earlier when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Fast forward to 2021, when President Biden signed legislation that made Juneteenth a federal holiday. Now, June 19 is celebrated as Juneteenth nationwide with parades, parties, commemoration events and community gatherings. This week, VMAIL Weekend takes a look at the rich history and growing importance of the Juneteenth holiday, including celebration posts from members of the optical community.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Recent best practice honorees and student award recipients weighed in on hot topics relevant to the optical industry and profession on Wednesday during a roundtable discussion hosted by CooperVision at Optometry’s Meeting here. Topics selected by the honorees and discussed included new and emerging technologies, contact lenses and myopia management, according to CooperVision. Back in March, as reported by VMAIL, CooperVision announced its 2024 Best Practices honorees and student award recipients.

Optical Celebrates National Eyewear Day

NEW YORK—On June 6, members of the eyecare and eyewear communities celebrated the ninth annual National Eyewear Day, a day founded by Zyloware Eyewear that is dedicated to bringing awareness to comprehensive eye exams and overall eye health. As reported in VMAIL, Zyloware kicked off National Eyewear Day with a number of resources to help everyone get involved, and partnered with Optical Academy to provide free eye exams and eyewear as part of a community event. In addition, many ECPs across the country took part in National Eyewear Day in their own communities, through fundraising, special events and more. Here, we’re taking a look at how some indies celebrated eyewear this June 6.
