It was a bittersweet moment Thursday morning when Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player hit their ceremonial tee shots to start The Masters golf tournament at Augusta. After their drives, the legendary golfers paid tribute to the late Arnold Palmer, who in the past has been on the first tee with Nicklaus and Player for the start of the annual tournament.

This year, a green jacket (which goes to winners of The Masters each year) was draped over a white chair on the tee box in memory of Palmer, who passed away last September.

In addition to his excellence in golf, Palmer was recognized as a humanitarian and philanthropist. His support was instrumental in The Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation, which helps fund the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies in central Florida. There’s also an Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation that continues Palmer’s legacy of philanthropy and supports such efforts as development of children and youth, health and wellness initiatives, and environmental causes.
