SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Standard Optical Company, based here, has completed its second acquisition of 2021 with the purchase of West Point Eye Center, in northern Utah, from Justin Holt, OD. West Point Eye Center was built in 2017 in one of the fastest growing and most affluent cities in Northern Utah. “Dr. Holt has built something special here in West Point and we’re fortunate to be able to continue his commitment to the people of this area,” said Standard CEO Aaron Schubach.

Dr. Holt completed optometry school in Puerto Rico 18 years ago after undergrad studies at Brigham Young University and is best known as a speaker for Bausch + Lomb and a staple across the Northern Utah's optometric scene. “Ironically, it was my employment at Standard Optical in the early 1990s, in-part, that lead me to select optometry as a profession, so it’s somewhat fitting that we have come full circle to partner with Standard Optical again.” He added, “My family and I have dedicated our lives to this practice and this community so it’s bittersweet to see the practice change hands, however, we believe Standard Optical is the right partner to continue our legacy.”

Standard Optical has been in business since 1911 in Utah and has several locations in Northern Utah to compliment the West Point office. “Dr. Holt has built a clinic that is ideal for medical optometry and we will make it a regional hub for our medical patients, especially glaucoma, cornea and retina patients,” remarked Schubach.

Standard Optical has an ophthalmology practice and may use West Point as its Northern Utah general ophthalmology clinic as well. Dr. Holt recently joined Anderson Eye Care based in Anderson California, a full-scope MD/OD medical practice with routine and surgical care capabilities in six regional California offices.

Standard's acquisition of West Point follows its previously announced acquisition of Classic Optical in the Salt Lake City metro area, as VMAIL reported in mid-December, a transaction which closed in January 2021.

According to Schubach, more deals are pending from Standard. “We are looking for healthy practices and we have ambitious growth projections. We offer the local OD/owner something distinctly different than what a traditional private equity firm might. We believe in protecting the legacy that has been built and keeping the community closely involved. As a Utah company we understand the nuance of the Utah market and we have a keen insight on thriving communities as well as the overalloptometric landscape.”

Standard Optical is a comprehensive eyecare provider with 21 locations in Utah and one laser center in Salt Lake City. It was founded in 1911 by Henry Schubach, great-grandfather of current CEO, Aaron Schubach. Standard Optical’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Opticare Vision Services, is the region's largest vision plan provider, with 300,000 members across the state.
