MEXICO CITY—Frank J. Devlyn Mortensen, co-founder of the Devlyn Group, passed away here on May 27, due to complications with cancer. He was 80 years-old. Devlyn was born in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico in 1939. He was the son of optometrists Frank and Nelva Devlyn, and the oldest of six children. Devlyn was proud to say he learned to make his first pair of glasses at age 8. After his father's unexpected passing when he was 22, Devlyn took over the family business along with his brothers, Jesse and Pat. Today, Devlyn is Mexico’s largest family-owned optical chain.

Devlyn was a goodwill ambassador and promoter both for the optical business and for his other passion, Rotary International, of which he became world president in 2000. Always proud of his Mexican heritage, Devlyn considered himself a “citizen of the world.” He was named Mexico’s EY Entrepreneur of the year in 2016. His motto was always “innovate and change with the times.”

A loving family man, he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria Rita, daughters Melanie (chairman and CEO), Stephanie and Jennifer, nine grandchildren and one great-grandaughter.

Funeral services were limited to family members due to COVID-19 regulations. A mass and service will be arranged for at a future date.
