World Sight Day – Oct. 11

By CLICK Staff

Dozens of companies within the optical industry, thousands of practitioners around the country and the world are gearing up to take an active part in World Sight Day – and encourage their patients and employees to do the same. World Sight Day 2012 is Oct. 11. The initiative is part of a year-round mission “to improve the quality of life of people who are needlessly blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses.” The Optometry Giving Sight website is loaded with informational video and many updates which can explain how eyecare practitioners and their patients can donate a portion of their sales, or a component of their purchase to the cause.

For practices, companies, patients, students, a click can provide a range of tools to enable fundraising support and participation.

A brief sampling of initiatives tied into October include: a plan from CooperVision to match all patient rebate donations for the month to Optometry Giving Sight in honor of World Sight Day. CooperVision is also inviting their staff to “brace themselves” by purchasing a special wristband and participating in staff activities at all their global sites on Oct. 11. The company will match all donations from their staff.

Transitions Optical is sponsoring the ‘Sight of the Day’ Photo contest, a competition to win sightseeing prizes by uploading a photo of an everyday moment. The contest, taking place on SeeMoreSights.com, will be accepting submissions through Sept. 30, 2012. For each photo uploaded, the Transitions Healthy Sight for Life Fund will make a small donation to Optometry Giving Sight (OGS), in contribution to OGS’ World Sight Day Challenge which culminates on Oct. 11. Contestants may submit an unlimited number of photos to enter the chance to win a grand prize of a 10-day National Geographic excursion to the Galapagos Islands, a first prize of a trip for four to Hawaii, a third prize of an American Express gift card for $1,500, and a weekly prize of a Shutterfly gift tote.

Optos has also announced that it will once again donate $1 for every Optomap retinal screening image that is taken on World Sight Day, “As a global company focused on protecting eyesight, Optos is proud to help raise awareness about preventing blindness by participating in the World Sight Day ‘Company’ Challenge,” said Roy Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Optos. “Routine eye exams, including a thorough screening of the retina using Optomap images, are important to maintaining vision with early detection of eye disease. We are pleased to make this donation to help underserved communities worldwide access sustainable eyecare.”
