It’s that time of the year again, when parents are on the run getting school supplies and shopping for new outfits in order to get their children ready for the new school year. As parents ready their preparations, ODs on social media are pushing awareness for Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month and encouraging parents to get their little ones’ eyes checked before they embark on their new journey.

The activity on social media is in support of Prevent Blindness and the National Optometric Association (NOA) who, for the second year in a row, have declared the month of August as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month in an effort to educate parents and caregivers on what steps they can take to ensure that their children and students are getting the eyecare they need.

This year’s Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month also coincides with the 10th anniversary of the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness. The Center is offering their newly revised Guide to Vision Health for Your Newborn, Infant, and Toddler at no cost to the public. This guide features information on various topics related to children’s vision including common milestones for visual development, how to help your baby’s vision to develop, warning signs of possible vision problems, and more.
