TOKYO—Hoya Group reported on May 6 that sales for the fourth quarter of the consolidated fiscal year ending March 31, 2022 amounted to 169,594 million yen, an increase of 12.0 percent from the same period of the previous fiscal year. Total revenue was 173,844 million yen, up 13.5 percent from year-ago. Hoya’s quarterly profit, before tax, amounted to 53,777 million yen, up 30.2 percent. After-tax quarterly profit amounted to 40,147 million yen, also a 30.2 percent increase. The quarterly profit margin before tax was 31.7 percent, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.4 points, the company said.

On a regional basis, Hoya’s fourth-quarter revenues from the Japanese market climbed to 41,511 million yen, up 8.8 percent from year-ago. The Americas region posted revenue of 26,958 million yen, up 12.9 percent; Europe experienced a 13.6 increase in fourth quarter to 33,218 million yen; Asia/Oceania generated 66,009 million yen in revenue, up 13.2 percent from year-ago.

Sales for Hoya’s Life Care segment, which is the company’s largest business unit and consists of health care-related products such as eyeglass lenses and contact lenses as well as medical-related products, rose to 106,130 million yen in the fourth quarter, an increase of 11.4 percent from year-ago. Segment profit increased by 32.4 percent to 19,534 million yen.

Sales of eyeglass lenses and contact lenses increased by a recovery following the resumption of economic activities compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year, Hoya reported. Sales of eyeglass lenses were strong, particularly overseas, and higher sales of high-value-added products also contributed to higher sales.

Contact lenses were affected by shortened operating hours at Japan’s Eye City specialty stores and a temporary decline in demand due to fewer opportunities to go out, as the quasi-state of emergency was issued in many parts of Japan. However, sales increased by steady growth in home delivery services and less impact on economic activities from the spread of infections than in the same period of the previous fiscal year.

In Hoya’s medical-related unit, sales of medical endoscopes and intraocular lenses for cataracts increased by a recovery following the resumption of economic activities compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2022, Hoya’s total revenue from all operations rose 20.7 percent to 661,466 million yen. Revenue for Japan totaled 164,663 million yen, up 13.8 percent from year-ago. The Americas generated 99.907 million yen in revenue, up 24.6 percent. Europe contributed 130,794 million yen in revenue, up 21.2 percent; and Asia/Oceania generated 258,679 million yen, up 23.4 percent.

Hoya’s Life Care segment generated 407,549 million yen in revenue for the fiscal year, a 19.2 percent increase from 2021. Revenue from health care-related products climbed to 299,823 million yen, up 19.2 percent from year-ago. Revenue from medical-related products rose 19.5 percent, to 107,726 million yen.
