Xpand Debuts World’s First Electronic Glasses For Lazy Eye Treatment

Product:
Amblyz
Top Line: Xpand 3D, a leader in multidimensional imaging technology, is introducing Amblyz electronic glasses for the treatment of amblyopia. Amblyz glasses work by electronically opening and shuttering the lens over the child’s good eye. A liquid crystal shutter is built into the lens and is used in order to block strong eye periodically.
Close Up: Xpand’s solution focuses on two fundamental issues that neither eye patches nor topical drugs have addressed. Using an electronic shutter to make one lens intermittently transparent or opaque, Amblyz electronic glasses occlude the healthy, strong eye in regular and intermittent periods to force the amblyopic eye to function and develop its muscles and neural connections. Secondly, the glasses are appealing and eliminate the discomfort — and social unease — of wearing a patch. These two points are key to increasing the likelihood that the child will receive a full and effective treatment.
Amblyz glasses have been developed by Xpand 3D in conjunction with top ophthalmologists and optometrists, and have been tested in clinical studies that demonstrate comparable effectiveness to current products and superiority in esthetics and comfort. These results were published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, July 2010, Vol. 51, No. 7.
“Until now, the only available treatments for amblyopia have been placing an eye patch over the child’s good eye in an effort to force the weak eye to strengthen, or to penalize the good eye with the application of atropine drops to induce blur,” said Maria Costeira, CEO, Xpand 3D. “These treatments can take years to complete. Many children find it difficult to persist in these long and demanding sessions and do not want to go through the embarrassment and discomfort of having to wear an eye patch. Our Xpand Amblyz glasses, on the other hand, now offer kids a solution that draws minimal attention to their condition as it is embedded into normal glasses.”
Vital Stats: Xpand Amblyz glasses will be available at select ophthalmologists and opticians beginning in December 2012.
