Optical Industry Brings Awareness to Winter Eye Health Via Social Media

During the winter months, your eyes can be at increased risk for injury. Despite the sun spending more time hidden behind clouds and shorter days, vision health can still be at risk due to Ultraviolet rays. This is also known as snow blindness and many people who live in northern climates are at risk. There is also an increased risk for developing photokeratitis, a condition resulting from exposure to ultraviolet light or man-made sources such as UV lamps. Today, sports enthusiasts use modern snow goggles featuring the latest sun blocking technology to protect their eyes. ECPs are working with their patients, both in-office and online, to educate and provide the right resources to prevent photokeratitis including helping them better identify the warning signs.

Microsoft’s Seeing AI App Launches on Android, Expanding Access to More Blind and Low Vision Users

REDMOND, Wash.—As part of the ongoing celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on Dec. 3, Microsoft has launched the newest version of its Seeing AI app on Android devices via the Google Play Store, sharing new app features and support in additional languages. The free app, designed for and with the blind and low vision community, uses the latest advances in AI at Microsoft to narrate the world from mobile devices.

How Indies Spent Diabetic Eye Disease Month

NEW YORK—This year, like every year, November marked Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. The month served as a time to bring light to the many diabetes-related eye diseases, and to educate patients and the general public on how diabetes can affect the eyes. As reported in VMAIL, the CDC states that approximately 37.3 million people have diabetes, and 96 million people aged 18 years or older have prediabetes—making information about diabetes-related eye diseases valuable to most Americans. ECPs across the country stepped up to educate patients this past November.
