In just a few days, many of us will gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving, a time set aside to be with the ones we love and to remember those close to us that are no longer with us. Serving as the unofficial kick-off to the holiday season (no football pun intended), Thanksgiving is the special day when many of us will begin to dream about the weeks ahead and the continuing festivities. But for one special day this November 23, many of us put aside thoughts of Black Friday shopping to remember all we have to be grateful for in a time of both economic and global instability. Scheduled to take place from March 14 to 17 at the Javits Center, Vision Expo East 2024 will mark nearly four decades of showcasing cutting-edge products, fostering education, and bringing together ophthalmic professionals in New York City. Sara Varghai, OD, FAAO, never planned to open a new practice in the middle of a pandemic. But working in a more retail-oriented practice, she wasn’t seeing the medical patients she wanted to. “So I decided to open my own practice,” she said. Dr. Varghai opened NOVA Optique + Eyecare in March 2021 in Arlington, Virginia. She wanted to practice differently. For one, she didn’t want to deal with vision plans, so she decided to create a cash only and medical insurance business. “I hear my colleagues lament how much of a discount they have to take from vision plans. They are working harder to make the same amount of money,” she said.
