College Football Kickoff: ‘Visions’ of a National Championship

The hopes and dreams of college football fans and school alumni alike kick off on Saturday August 26, also known as Week 0, with a handful of games scheduled. And the more things change, the more they apparently stay the same as two-time defending national champion Georgia enters the 2023 season as the top-ranked team in most preseason polls. The Bulldogs, 29-1 over the past two seasons, are expected to be challenged by the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, USC, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson, Washington, Texas, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Utah and Oregon. Of course, the anticipation of another college football season brings out the fan and weekend warrior in many of us, including those in the optical industry. We asked some optical leaders where their loyalties stand on the gridiron and what their predictions are for the upcoming season.

NEW YORK—The world watched in disbelief on August 8 as brutal wildfires swiftly destroyed Hawaii's historic Lahaina region in Maui and some surrounding areas, in what is now described as the deadliest U.S. wildfire in over a century. Even as the disaster was unfolding, those in the optometric and vision care community began to try their best to gauge what was happening and pull together whatever resources they could to immediately help those who suffered tremendous loss and ascertain how they could help.

Southern College of Optometry Awards Three Young Alumni Who Own or Operate Private Practices

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, has recognized three young alumni with the Hayes Center for Practice Excellence Award—an award which recognizes a graduate of the past 10 years who owns and operates a private optometry practice. This year’s recipients are: Autumn Adams, OD, for the Practice Acquisition Award; Derek Hennig, OD, for the Partnership Award; and Andrew Bradbury, OD, for the New Practice Award.
