VM Examines a New Wave of Presbyopia Treatments in Its Special Report ‘What’s New for Older Eyes’

Most people over 40 are familiar with the perils of presbyopia, a vision condition in which the lens in your eye becomes harder and less flexible as you age. As a result, the lens loses its ability to focus light correctly on the retina, which makes it difficult to focus on close objects. Many presbyopes can be identified by their reading glasses which often sit on top of their head until it’s time to look at or read something up close. Presbyopia is a natural part of the aging process of the eye. It is not a disease, and it cannot be prevented. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t solutions out there for the nearly 128 million Americans affected by the condition.

Economic Pressures Are Impacting ECP Practices, But Optimism Remains, Per Latest Jobson Research ECPulse Q2 Survey

NEW YORK—Inflation pressures have resulted in many ECPs feeling the need to raise prices on eyewear products and services this year, even as many (78 percent) of respondents reported that their patients were still trying to save money this year. In fact, just over a third (34 percent) of those surveyed by Jobson Research last month say their practice is "greatly impacted by the state of the economy," a higher number than in March 2023, while 60 percent feel their practice is only "slightly affected" by the economy, although that response is lower than the prior Q1 survey.

Kicking Off Dry Eye Awareness Month

NEW YORK—Prevent Blindness has declared July as Dry Eye Awareness Month in an effort to educate the public on dry eye, which the National Eye Institute reports affects nearly 16 million Americans. To further its efforts, Prevent Blindness has put together a variety of resources including fact sheets and shareable social media graphics, available in English and Spanish, as well as a dedicated web page. Independent ECPs are getting involved with Dry Eye Awareness Month, too. There’s still plenty of time to get involved so take a look at how some indies have set aside social media posts for Dry Eye Awareness Month.
