Amazing Eyes of the Animal Kingdom

NEW YORK—While the human eye can do some very impressive things, our eyes are by no means the best of the best or even the most interesting. With phrases like “Birds-Eye View,” “Hawk Eye” and “Eagle Eye” there’s no doubt that some eyes of the animal kingdom are capable of amazing feats. However, while other species like starfish might have less capable sight, their visual capabilities have fascinated scientists for decades. Lab Execs Address Implications of New Technology in VM’s Modern Lab Panel

LAS VEGAS—Owners and executives from both large and small labs, addressed concerns, opportunities and the effects of emerging technology at The Modern Lab – Propelling Optical’s Smart Lab Era, hosted by Vision Monday and LabTalk. The program, based on VM’s Modern Lab editorial series, was kicked off by Andrew Karp, Jobson’s lens and technology editor. He began with an overview of recent trends that are reshaping the labscape. “The consolidation wave of the past two decades is over, and we see a new wave of start-ups,” said Karp. A panel discussion followed, featuring Swen Carlson, vice president of operations for VSP Optics and chair of The Vision Council’s Lab Division; Keith Grossman, co-owner of Simplify Optics; Scott Pearl, managing director of ABB Optical Group’s Digital Eye Lab Network; and Bryan Schueler, vice president and general manager of Walman’s ophthalmic lab division.

Nadia Afkhami’s ‘Eye Am Nadia’ Functions as her Social Media Personal Diary

Nadia Afkhami is a second-year optometry student at the Western University of Health Science in Pomona, Calif. With a master’s degree in biomedical sciences from Barry University in Miami, Afkhami made the decision to pursue optometry after observing the relationships optometrists often make with their patients. After having lived in Orlando for most of her life, (she was born in Iran and migrated when she was 2), Afkhami decided to create Eye Am Nadia in an effort to chronicle her life as a budding optometrist in California for her friends back home to see. Now with over 2,000 followers, the Instagram page has become a community.
