On average, according to a new global survey conducted by Wakefield Research for Alcon, Americans have let three years pass since they last spoke to their eye doctor about proper contact lens care. To combat the “ick” factor that can accompany poor lens care habits, a national campaign entitled Pour That Out has been launched by Alcon to give patients and doctors quick tips for best use and comfort. Eyecare professionals can discuss solutions for the bad habits with patients, and point their patients to PourThatOut.com as a resource for best lens care practice.

The study illustrated many, simple misconceptions of today’s adult contact lens wearers: for example, 73 percent believe they can tell how clean their contact lenses are just by looking at them. A whopping 96 percent of Americans admit to frequently reusing or topping-off yesterday’s cleaning solution while 1 in 3 (32 percent) sometimes use old contact solution. And 82 percent believe the primary purpose of lens solution is storing contacts and keeping them moist.
