Latest News VOSH/International, In Collaboration With Brien Holden Vision Institute, Announces First VOSH Corps Placement By Staff Monday, May 25, 2015 12:24 AM OMAHA, Neb.—VOSH/International announced it has made its first placement in the newly established VOSH Corps program. Justin Manning, OD, has been selected to serve one or more years in Nicaragua on the faculty of the optometry school at UNAN-Managua, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua. The goal of VOSH Corps is to build optometric education worldwide. VOSH Corps is a collaboration with the Brien Holden Vision Institute and is supported by Optometry Giving Sight. Modeled after the Peace Corps program, graduates from North American optometry schools are recruited to serve in emerging optometric institutions around the world as faculty and program development assistants. Dr. Manning is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Optometry and has completed a residency at The Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System American Lake Division in Tacoma, WA. He will begin his tenure at UNAN in September 2015. When asked about his reasons for applying to VOSH Corps and his future plans, Dr. Manning said, "During my first Student VOSH trip (to Nicaragua of all places), I thought to myself, if there was any way I could make a living doing this, I would do it in a heartbeat. That sentiment only grew following my second VOSH trip to Bolivia. Since those two trips, the dream to move abroad developed and when the opportunity to return to Nicaragua presented itself, I knew it was where we were meant to be. I had the opportunity to go to Managua in March to volunteer a week with the Brien Holden Vision Institute Eye Health Mentor Program. Meeting the students, I was blown away by their love of optometry, passion for bringing eye care to the people of Nicaragua, and deep desire to change their country. I can't wait to get to UNAN and join the students in that passion and drive, working with them to develop their clinical skills. It really is an honor and privilege to be able to serve in such a meaningful capacity."More information about VOSH Corps, including application information, can be found here.
