NEW YORK—The 50 largest eyewear/eyecare retailers and optometric practices in the U.S. surpassed $10 billion in combined optical sales in 2013, according to Vision Monday’s exclusive listing of the Top 50 U.S. Optical Retailers, released today and available here and in the May 19 print edition. With mergers and acquisitions occurring at all levels of the chart, expansions and new players coming into the ranking, optical retailers jockeyed for position this year, some rising in status while others fell.

With Luxottica Retail leading the list at number one for the 15th consecutive year, the Top 10 remained mostly intact other than Vision Source’s collective franchisee revenues, reported for the first time, joining the ranks in the second spot and Texas State Optical losing the number ten position compared to the 2013 report. Rounding out the 2014 VM Top 10 U.S. Optical Retailers are third place Wal-Mart Stores, fourth place Visionworks of America, National Vision (#5), Costco Wholesale (#6), Refac Optical Group (#7), Eyemart Express (#8), For Eyes/Insight Optical Mfg. (#9), and Cohen’s Fashion Optical (#10).

In addition to ranking the Top 50 U.S. Optical Retailers by sales during calendar year 2013, this special Vision Monday report also includes an overview of these top industry players’ performance in relation to the total U.S. vision care market, snapshots profiling the Top 10 retailers’ activities last year and an update about what they’re doing this year, and a closer look at the key mass merchants and warehouse clubs with a presence in the optical business.
