Latest News Memorial Service to be Held for William Mattingly By Staff Friday, July 3, 2015 12:18 AM EL PASO, Texas—William “Bill” Mattingly, a respected low vision specialist and noted optician, passed away on June, 18, 2015 from a rare degenerative brain disease at age 66. Born on Oct. 2, 1948, Mattingly had a long and distinguished career within the optical professional. In 2007 until his death, he was the president of Mattingly Low Vision, Inc. He became the vice president, education and product development for Optelec US in 2005 before becoming president of professional products for Optelec US from 2005 to 2006, and later from 2006 to 2007 he was named the vice president of Optelec US. Within the industry Mattingly was named a Master in Ophthalmic Optics in 1989 by the American Board of Opticianry, and in 1998 he was named an honored fellow by the Opticians Association of America. He served on The Vision Council’s low vision division steering committee and was also a member of the low vision division education task force. Along with being a member of The Vision Council and the American Board of Opticianry, Mattingly gave his time and skills to various societies and organizations within the optical sphere throughout his career. Mattingly conducted research, worked at leading companies, was an educator and authored many journals. After graduating from California State University at Los Angeles in 1974, with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, he received his California Restricted Teaching Credential for mobility for the visually impaired in 1976 before getting a Master of Arts in Special Education: Orientation and Mobility for the Visually Impaired in 1976 from California State University at Los Angeles. In 1982 he became a certified optician until the present. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Maranatha Chapel’s main sanctuary located at 10752 Coastwood Road, San Diego, Calif.
