NEW YORK—Graduation season is over and it’s time for new optometrists to step onto the OD scene. For many of them, unforeseen issues await across state lines—scope of practice laws. As detailed in a recent blog post from NewGradOptometry.com (NGO), authority to administer certain treatments varies state by state and many new docs are unaware of these legalities. To help recent grads prepare for these possible limitations and to ensure they practice to their fullest, NGO’s Quy Nguyen, OD and founder Matt Geller, OD created an infographic map stating (no pun intended) what’s allowed across each state in the country. View the map and a milestone timeline of the progress optometry has made over the years in VM Multimedia.

Once you’ve got your scope of practice in order, consider an important issue that every practice should make a priority, no matter what state they’re in—UV safety. In a lighthearted educational video from VSP EyeFiles, a mother-daughter conflict ensues when Mom agrees to take her teen on a first driving lesson and wants her to cover up with a hat and sunglasses. Watch it unfold into an eye healthy ending in the latest VM Video.
