JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Following Johnson & Johnson Vision Care’s introduction of Unilateral Pricing Policy for its contact lenses in June 2014 on some “strategic brands,” as reported by VMail, last month the company recently announced an adjustment to the policy. “Johnson & Johnson Vision Care recently adjusted its Unilateral Pricing Policy (UPP) to allow any reseller to offer an in-store or in-office credit up to $50 as part of a combined product offer when an annual supply of contact lenses is purchased, provided they adhere to conditions of the policy,” a Johnson & Johnson Vision Care spokesperson told VMail.

“This policy has not been adjusted for any specific reseller,” the spokesperson said. “Costco and other resellers are offering in-store and in-office credits, independent of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, when an annual supply is purchased. Any contact lens reseller can offer a similar in-office or in-store credit when an annual supply is purchased and conditions of the UPP are met.” Costco declined to comment to VMail.

In Johnson & Johnson Vision Care’s UPP, all wholesale customers receive the same pricing on Acuvue Oasys, Acuvue Moist, and 1-Day Acuvue TruEye, and a minimum retail price has been set for these products as well. Also, manufacturer’s rebates have been eliminated by building those discounts into the retail price of these legacy products.

VMail contacted the other contact lens suppliers—Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, and CooperVision—who have also introduced Unilateral Pricing Policies for certain specific products by offering the same wholesale prices across the board and requiring minimum retail pricing. They each replied to VMail that they have not adjusted their policies since they were introduced.

Alcon’s UPP applies to the company’s newest technology contact lenses, including Dailies Total1, Dailies AquaComfort Plus Multifocal and Toric, and Air Optix Colors. Bausch + Lomb’s UPP products are Ultra contact lenses with MoistureSeal technology. Following CooperVision’s $1.2 billion, August 2014, acquisition of Sauflon, the manufacturer of Clariti contact lenses, the company adopted UPP for that entire line.
