CHICAGO—Opternative has raised $6.0 million in Series A venture funding which it will use to expand its online eye exam to more states, reach a broader age demographic and conduct research and development.

“We’re in 33 states now, and are going to be expanding into more states in the next couple of quarters,” Opternative co-founder Aaron Dallek told VMail. “We’re looking to expand to patients older than 40, and are working on improving the user experience.” Dallek said Opternative will gradually increase the age range for its exam, with the next step up being 45 year-olds. “We want to make sure we’re taking care of patients appropriately,” he added.

Dallek also said Opternative is developing “a deeper integration” in its partnerships with optical retailers, but declined to identify which retailers Opternative is working with.

Opternative offers its online eye exam for free. The exam can be performed by anyone who has a smartphone and computer, and will generate an eyeglass prescription. For a $40 fee, an ophthalmologist will review and the prescription will be ready within 24 hours.

Opternative’s latest round of funding was led by Jump Capital. Other investors included Pritzker Group Venture Capital and NextGen Venture Partners.
