There’s a book that’s been on the New York Times’ Bestseller list for 89 weeks now. It’s called “The Happiness Project,” by Gretchen Rubin, a former lawyer, who, on her commute to work one day, was inspired to make her life more meaningful. She determined she would spend 12 months on a project which would “test-drive” the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier.

The book has struck a chord with so many because of Rubin’s plain spoken tone, humorous anecdotes and advice. Its basic message is, while it’s not easy to see the positive in literally everything, life is filled with ups and downs for nearly everyone. But people can improve the happiness in their lives by taking little steps and reorienting themselves to the realities that everyone goes through. One of her quotes is to “Work harder to appreciate your ordinary day.”

Reading parts of the book again got me thinking about the exceptional people I encounter most every day. The people I get a chance to talk to who are doing such interesting things. The friends and colleagues of mine, many of whom I’ve gotten to know through my unique job, who are each talented, sharp and fun individuals who contribute all the time.

The lessons of “The Happiness Project” can apply to our business life as well as the personal. You should check it out.

And, while we’re on the topic of exceptional people, I must send out some words here about Rick Bay, a good friend of mine and so many of us here at Jobson and throughout the vision care field.

Rick passed away earlier this month after fighting a great fight, but staying active and committed in his role as president of the Professional Group here throughout.

It’s very hard to express in words what Rick meant to me and everyone he knew. He was a great friend, fun, thoughtful, sharp, elegant, supportive, warm, full of energy, a mentor and a true leader. It was a privilege to know Rick. He made life Happy.

All the best to you and yours for the Holidays and a prosperous, healthy and Happy New Year.
