RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.— VSP Vision Care is expanding its Diabetic Eyecare Program to include coverage for services related to glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The managed vision care company has released a video to announce the upgrade. While the company has covered diabetic eye disease for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes since the program was introduced in January 2010, a VSP spokesperson told VMail that the expansion to cover additional services went into effect July 1, 2013.

While the key difference in the program is the addition of eyecare services related to glaucoma and AMD, the VSP spokesperson told VMail that the company has also added retinal screening services for eligible patients who have diabetes but don’t show signs of diabetic eye disease. All VSP providers are able to participate in the program and can perform any of the services covered under the Diabetic Eyecare Plus program. Nearly 34 million VSP members are already covered by one of VSP’s primary eyecare programs, 19 million of whom have access to critical vision services under its diabetic eyecare programs.
