American Optometric Foundation Offers $30,000 Mertz Fellowship to Optometrists at Any Stage in Their Career

December 21, 2012 8:18 AM

ORLANDO, Fla—Applications are now being accepted for the Jill and George Mertz Fellowship, celebrating the former American Optometric Foundation president George Mertz and his wife Jill. The $30,000 Mertz Fellowship is available for 2013 to support travel to another institution to conduct a period of study. Optometrists at any stage of their career are eligible.

Applicants must be U.S. or Canadian citizens (or permanent residents) who will conduct their research outside North America, or they must be foreign nationals who will conduct their fellowship in North America. Applications are encouraged to promote an exchange of educational or scientific methodologies with the potential for outcomes not otherwise possible by encouraging a diversity of experience and thinking. While the fellowship period is not fixed, it must be at least six months in duration.

The application has two key components: 1) a two-page description of how the fellowship will be used, the opportunity it will provide and the impact it will have on the applicant's career; and 2) a letter of support from the proposed host institution with a budget describing how the funds will be used. A curriculum vitae of no more than three pages should accompany the application. The application deadline is Feb. 22, 2013. Click here for complete details.
