The Academy Awards is the oldest and most prominent media award ceremony in the world. They are televised live in more than 100 countries each year and a win can make an actor’s career. In this Bold Face we highlight three industry veterans who may just consider the Oscar’s ‘old hat’…

Meryl Streep is a well decorated actress that has been nominated for a staggering 43 awards in her career and is regarded as one of the most talented film actresses of the modern era. Seventeen of her nominations were for an Academy Award but unbelievably, this year she took home only her second Oscar for her portrayal of Margret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. First recognized by the Academy in 1978 for The Deer Hunter, she won her first Oscar in 1983 for Sophie’s Choice and then had to wait nearly 29 years and 15 additional nominations before bringing her first golden statuette a friend. Christopher Plummer’s career spans seven decades but he might best be known to audiences as Captain von Trapp from The Sound of Music and from the legendary television miniseries The Thorn Birds. His most recent films include The Insider, Disney-Pixar’s Up, The Last Station and this year’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Despite his many accomplishments, including two Emmys, two Tonys, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, he did not receive his first Oscar nom until 2009 for The Last Station. Now, only two years later, he has nabbed his second nomination and first win for the role of Hal, a terminally-ill septuagenarian who comes out to his adult son after the death of his wife, in Beginners. The Oscar win made him, at 82, the oldest actor ever to win an Academy Award. In the film, Plummer, as Hal, wears the Oliver Peoples Albert optical frame…




Billy Crystal has actually never won a major acting award. Nonetheless that has not stopped him from being a regular fixture at the Academy Awards… as host. Crystal has hosted the oldest and most significant awards ceremony for film a whopping nine times, the only celebrity to host more times is Bob Hope.
