University of the Incarnate Word Breaks Ground on Eye Care and Health Institute
SAN ANTONIO, Texas—The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) broke ground this month on the $8 million dollar, 30,000-square foot UIW Eye Care and Health Institute to serve the Eastside community, a neighborhood of 143,500 residents in which there is currently only one private optometry office. Funded by UIW and the City of San Antonio, the Institute will serve patients with licensed eyecare professionals and interns from
UIW’s Rosenberg School of Optometry.
“The uniqueness of this futuristic Eye Institute is that it will be founded on the same values that serve as the foundation for all University of the Incarnate Word projects,” said Andrew Buzzelli, OD, MS, dean, Rosenberg School of Optometry. “It will be a community partnership committed to excellence in patient care and education within a context of faith, human dignity and social justice.” The Institute will focus on access to eyecare for vulnerable populations, particularly children, the elderly and the uninsured. Patients will be accepted regardless of their ability, or inability, to pay.
